Ayurvedic medicinal properties of drumsticks

Moringa oleifera popularly known as drumstick grows in dry sandy soil and in tropical regions like India. Drumstick soups and curries are a favorite delicacy for Indians. For the habitat part, drumstick trees are slender with droopy branches and their flowers are bluish white in color. The seed pods are triangular in shapre and are contained in long and slender pod forms.

Medicinal properties:

• Containing alkaloids, flavonoids and anthocyanin, drumsticks are anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial by nature. They also act as an antifertility agent.
• Drumstick pods are light to digest and are slightly bitter in taste. It increases the heat or pitha in the body and so alleviates vata and kapha in Ayurvedic terms.
• Drumstick can heal inflamed conditions like open wounds, joint pain and arthritis. In Ayurveda, the seed’s power is administered through one’s nose to reduce severe headache.
• The leaves and bark of drumstick tree are used in treating paralysis, nervous disorders according to Ayurveda.
• The leaves and fruits of drumstick plant increase digestion and stimulate one’s appetite. It also reduces cramps and eradicates intestinal worms.
• Women who suffer from menstrual cramps can use the plant’s leaves in treating pain and irritability. At the same time women while pregnant are advised to stay away from drumstick as it might stimulate uterine contractions and result in pre-birth, according to Ayurveda.
• The leaves of drumstick plant contain antioxidants and so help in maintain blood cholesterol levels and heart health. It will also fight against free radicals in the bloodstream and keep a person fit and healthy.
• Lastly, according to Ayurveda, drumsticks help improve the quality and quantity of semen in men and assist effectively in treating erectile dysfunction problems.
